TRIP SHOW’s album The Far East Is The Near West And The Wild West Is The Near East was born of “1984 Waikiki teen clubs to DJing the San Francisco barscapes, techno happy hours and afterhours”. The Honolulu-based producer (AKA John Keaka Friend) has 25 years of electronic music creation under his belt via remixes and releases through Cytrax, Losonofono Records, Select Cuts, Nude Photo Music, BSI, and eponymous label Trip Show. In the words of the artist, “I tried to make the kind of record that wouldn't leave my bag. Bonus beats and melodies, tracky and dubby post-house. Positive, but not for the weekend warrior. Influenced by Pépé Bradock, the Easy Street label and bleep techno.”

about

"The kind of record the creator himself would subconsciously or even subliminally push on patrons at SF's Open Mind Music in its sublime heyday - dubby, glacial, effervescent, techno flirts... but never without that almighty soul. 5/5* - Dave Aju (Circus Company / Elbow Grease)

“Solid, satisfying, and full of surprises. Looking forward to this full length album”
-Jonah Sharp (Spacetime Continuum)

"Slick low end production with an evocative nod to the synth experimentations of the 80s. Rubbery slappy funky hooky bass lines pop up in unsuspecting places. Syncopated jazzy percussion rhythms underscore and dance with the straight ahead techno drums, hinting at melodies whispering in the distance. Occasional nods to electro and idm you can’t quite make out in the distance. "
-Jeffrey Paradise (Poolside)

"... There's some acid and early 80s disco melted here, but perhaps early Chicago Techno House can also be traced. ... If this record would be played on any club night right now, then the crowd would definitely go wild..."
(Points: 8.3 out of 10)
-Gabor (Strutter'zine)

"There’s an outdoorsy expansiveness hinted at in track titles like “Trailhead,” “Urban Coyote,” and “Cold and Brilliant Light.” Others like the fantastic “At” and “Easy Rough” conjure open-ended perambulations. And the music itself takes listeners on a meandering, psychotropic journey—Trip Show is well-named—of gently mutating grooves, flashing textures, and half-remembered sounds burbling up from the past. Vibrant rhythms and ideas shift kaleidoscopically, like molten lava freezing into slightly irregular hexagons. An organic sheen coats every sound.
In short (and without the belabored metaphors), it’s the kind of cerebrum-tickling, chilled-out yet dancefloor-ready album you’d expect from someone who was crucial to the post-rave San Francisco electronic scene at the turn of the century, when Intelligent Dance Music, glitch, and an ambient revival had taken hold—and whose record recommendations were essential to a generation of nightlifers, just before the Internet offered everything at once."
-MARKE B., 48 Hills

The Far East Is The Near West And The Wild West Is The Near East (Broken Clover, 17. Juni) fängt diese Haltung mit einer guten Menge Sonnenwärme ein und wirkt vermutlich genau deswegen so frisch.”
